AM I alone in being appalled and saddened by the apparent failures of the churches and mosques in this country to shout out loud and clear in thunderous tones about the dreadful situation in the refugee camps in Dunkirk? There, children and young people are being abused, beaten and raped by people traffickers not thirty miles from our Channel shore.

As an occasional attender at a local church, and attending on Sunday, the priest said nothing about this, despite delivering a long homily about good neighbourliness. I am a failed Christian, now elderly and sick, but when I was a child before the Second World War the country had the honest decency to accept 20,000 children fleeing Nazi persecution. Why cannot we do now what we did then? What has happened to our moral compass? All we see is selfishness and failure to act in the interests of the poor and helpless. And in my faith, surely that is what Jesus Christ was all about? Brexit, Trump and Dunkirk – all of a piece. If Jesus Christ had been living at this hour he would have wept – as I did yesterday in church.
