I WAS not surprised to see David Crawford (Letters, February 8) being lambasted (Letters, February 11) for suggesting that money spent on Gaelic is disproportionate.

Perhaps not all pupils choose the subject for academic reasons.

The school I taught in had a Gaelic unit with small numbers of pupils. I remember asking one boy, admittedly not the sharpest card in the pack, why he rated Gaelic as his favourite subject.

His proud reply? “It's guid because you get a taxi from your hame to the school and back. Nae bus for me.”
