I NOTED on a traipse through Glasgow the other day that Dunnes Stores has closed its doors in Sauchiehall Street. If the development proposed at Buchanan Galleries goes ahead and Marks and Spencer makes its intended move to there what becomes of what was once described as Glasgow’s Golden Mile of shopping?

The Charing Cross end has become a glut of clubs and bars with all the associated litter and unruly behaviour at night. The middle is starting to fill with closed store fronts and the remainder is slowly receding towards Buchanan Galleries.

There was talk of a council initiative to gentrify the back alleys in the area, but to what purpose if the main thoroughfare is in peril of further decline? This is a mirror of what has happened to our small town centres throughout Scotland and beyond with the spread of massive out-of-town shopping centres and highly rated city centre properties. I often wonder why Glasgow, which I love dearly, gets the name for being a top shopping experience in the UK.
