I DO not condone troubled Ant McPartlin’s drunk driving offence or underestimate the gravity of a head-on collision which could have resulted in serious injury, and I respect the judgement of his 20-month driving ban and £85,000 fine based on income (“Fallen idol who needs to be allowed the space to recover,” The Herald, April 18).

It does bring to mind, however, the 2014 Glasgow bin lorry tragedy in which six pedestrians were killed and 15 injured when a driver who had lied to his employers over his medical history and failed to declare it to the licensing authority escaped prosecution when he blacked-out and his bin lorry mounted the pavement, and who drove while banned some months later.

Usually it’s the rich who seem to get off lightly.
