Teacake tycoon Boyd Tunnock picked up an honorary degree for his contribution to industry on Tuesday.

Boyd received the award at Glasgow Caledonian University's winter graduation ceremony.

In his address to students from the university's School of Engineering and Built Environment and School of Health and Life Sciences the 83-year-old described himself as a "humble baker".

Thanking the university, he spoke of the legacy of Thomas Tunnock Limited, where he started work at eight years of age, before going on to launch the company's world-famous teacakes.

He is now chairman and managing director of the company, which also produces its popular caramel wafers.

Boyd was given an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Business Administration.

He said: "The best advice I ever received was: 'If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again."
