THE Tory-Liberal Democrat Coalition has clamped down on what it has dubbed "double claiming" on tax reliefs by utility companies.

Chancellor George Osborne has announced an end to the practice with immediate effect. Treasury sources estimate it could save taxpayers hundreds of millions of pounds.

The Treasury was prompted to act after some utility firms began earlier this year to claim allowances for work done to update energy infrastructure.

The UK Government said the allowances can only be claimed by the firm that has paid to have the upgrade, not by the company which carried out the work.

HM Revenue and Customs is now expected to challenge the current claims – thought to total around £50 million.
