HELEN McElhone, the former Glasgow Labour MP and ex-Strathclyde councillor, has died.

She was 80.

Ms McElhone became MP for Glasgow's Queens Park in 1982 after contesting a by-election, caused by the death of her husband, Frank, who entered Westminster in 1969 as MP for Glasgow Gorbals.

Within six months of her victory, the Glasgow Queen's Park constituency was abolished in boundary changes and she subsequently lost out to a neighbouring MP in the selection for a new seat. She left parliament when it was prorogued ahead of the May 1983 General Election.

Lord Foulkes, the former Scotland Office Minister, said: "She was a strong woman, very political and very active; not to be underestimated despite her short period as an MP."
