AS MPs today brace themselves for a backlash over a proposed £10,000 pay rise, Ed Miliband called for a ban on MPs taking on second high-paid jobs as directors and consultants.

During PMQs, he told David Cameron: "I say in the next Parliament – and this will affect both sides of this House – MPs should not be able to take on new paid directorships and consultancies."

Today, the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority is expected to propose a rise in MPs' pay to around £75,000.
