PLANNED changes to criminal legal aid could have unintended consequences which could add to the cost of the system, according to an influential group of MSPs.

The Government has been asked to take a fresh look at issues such as some accused being allowed to recoup their costs, the threshold for contributions and the issue of lawyers having to collect the money.

The MSPs are asking the Government to monitor the changes and report back in three years to ensure that fears about the proposals do not turn into serious problems, such as knock-on costs or a surge in appeals to Europe.

Despite these reservations, the Justice Committee report on the Scottish Civil Justice Council and Criminal Legal Assistance Bill offered a "cautious welcome" to the Bill as a whole.
