THE chief executive of insurance giant Aviva has said the independence referendum was a matter for the Scottish people.

Mark Wilson, whose firm employs 2500 staff north of the Border, said last night it was "looking with interest" at Scotland, but would not become directly involved in the campaign.

He added: "We operate all around the world and in many jurisdictions and in many places so I really think that's not an issue for us to focus on."

Shell, Lloyds Banking Group and Barclays have lined up to warn of the economic risks of a Yes vote. However, the pro-independence camp have been buoyed by British Airways, which said independence could be a positive development, and budget airline Ryanair.

A Yes Scotland spokesman said: "Many leading business figures are relaxed about the referendum as they realise that Scotland, regardless of the outcome of the vote, will continue to be an excellent place to do business."
