THE BBC's debate for young voters, staged at the Hydro venue in Glasgow, has become a cult hit on social media.

Teenagers took to Twitter in their thousands to discuss the views of SNP deputy leader Nicola Sturgeon, Scottish Greens co-convener Patrick Harvie, Scots Conservative leader Ruth Davidson and Respect MP George Galloway.

But using the hashtag #BigBigDebate the 8,000 first-time voters did not confine themselves to politics. In a blizzard of tweets on the micro-blogging site they vented their anger at the price of the food, complained of boredom at their long wait in the over-heated venue and tried to meet "sexies" in the audience.

Their messages had the debate "trending" as one of the most talked about events in the UK.

Most tweeters believed the Yes team won the debate. Ms Sturgeon won most praise, while Mr Galloway came in for the most frequent criticism.

It wasn't all about his politics, however. Mae tweeted: "George Galloway LITERALLY WORE A FEDORA omgggg."

Comedian Des Clarke, sent out as the warm up man, fared no better. BigBigDebanter said: "When Des Clarke came on they should have put up his Wikipedia page so people knew who he was."

Among those following the debate, Sophie wrote: "Yes definitely won today's debate and have most definitely confirmed my Yes vote."
