Most Scots would prefer more powers for Holyrood than outright independence, according to a poll.

A stronger Scottish Parliament is backed by 57%, compared with 35% for Scotland to leave the UK, YouGov found.

The YouGov poll of 1,148 adults also showed 30% of SNP voters prefer more devolution to independence and that one in five Labour voters backs independence.

Shadow Scottish secretary Margaret Curran, a Labour MP, said: "When presented with a choice between a more powerful Scottish Parliament within the UK or taking a leap into the unknown with separation, people in Scotland overwhelmingly support remaining in the UK."

The pro-independence Yes Scotland group said the choice of more powers for Holyrood, as part of the UK, will not be on the ballot paper on September 18.

Chief executive Blair Jenkins said: "The most recent poll shows that Yes needs only three more points to reach 50%, and it is interesting that the No campaign did not ask about referendum voting intentions in their poll."
