A Shetland pensioner has launched a petition to block the independence referendum on the island, arguing that Shetland is not part of Scotland.

Campaigner Stuart Hill, 71, believes having the vote on the island gives "legitimacy" to the Scottish and UK governments who he views as "occupying forces".

Mr Hill has previously been to court three times to challenge the authority of the state on the islands and sent a Freedom of Information request to both Governments asking for proof that the island is part of the UK.

He said: "The idea of holding the referendum on Shetland is absolutely ludicrous.

"On the basis that Shetland is not part of Scotland, I have sent a petition seeking to block the legislation that enables the referendum to be held, as that legislation purports to apply to Shetland.

"In the past, the judiciary has gone to extraordinary lengths to avoid confronting the question of whether Shetland is part of Scotland. I do not expect anything different with this petition."
