A MAJOR theatre show about the independence referendum this summer will have contributions from people from Rutherglen to Mumbai, Paris to Istanbul.

The Great Yes, No, Don't Know, Five Minute Theatre Show, presented by the National Theatre of Scotland (NTS), has revealed that 180 submissions from the public have been chosen for the event.

The 24 hour online broadcast of live theatre, on June 23, will feature 840 performers across eight countries.

The show, co-curated by playwright David Greig, who is a supporter of Scottish independence, and David MacLennan, who is a supporter of the Union, will be performed live across Scotland.

The five minute theatre pieces in the show include contributions from "poets, school pupils, film-makers, families, community groups, teenagers, visual artists and expectant mothers, with ages ranging from three months to 80 years old" the NTS said.

Greig said: "I have been blown away by the sheer range and quality of the ideas from The Great Yes, No, Don't Know, Five Minute Theatre Show.

"Even in their rawest state, the submissions explode with thought, energy and humour.

"They capture the spirit of the moment at this crucial point in Scotland's history. The audiences are in for a real treat."

MacLennan added: "The submissions reflect every possible view in the referendum debate and put together they are going to make a thoughtful, passionate, provocative and highly entertaining variety show; "Theatre of the people, by the people, for the people."

Locations for shows include Rutherglen, Govan, East Timor, Los Angeles, Lancaster, Texas, Thurso, Leeds, Istanbul, New Jersey, South Australia, Edinburgh, New York, Mumbai, Inverness and Paris.

Theatrical 'hubs' for live shows in Scotland will also be revealed.

The shows will also be performed in a series of unusual locations including a garden, a field, a car park, schools, bedrooms, a toilet, a pub, a library, a hospital, a beach, and the Falkirk Wheel.

The final line-up, with additional contributions from Scottish performers, writers and theatre-makers, is still to be announced.
