Scottish MPs should lose their seats if and when independence day is declared in 2016, potentially triggering a change of UK Prime Minister, an SNP MP will argue today.

Western Isles MP Angus MacNeil will also say that the UK and Scottish Government should start negotiations on the issue now.

If Labour win by a narrow margin in 2015, Scottish independence just months later could trigger another election.

Last week a Tory MP called for Scottish voters to be barred from the 2015 General Election vote if Scots vote yes in September.

But that suggestion met with howls of protests, with critics warning that constituents could not be left without representation.

Mr MacNeil accused Westminster of having its "head in the sand" over many issues surrounding potential independence. He said: "It is important people understand what is happening here. Some Scottish MPs maybe like Westminster so much they will try to cling on (after independence)."
