Willie Rennie has revealed that he will never forgive the Conservatives for dividing the UK during the General Election.

The Scottish Liberal Democrat leader said that the Tories decision to play up the prospect of a Labour SNP coalition during General Election and its use of posters with Ed Miliband in Alex Salmond's pocket had damaged the Union.

Labour and the SNP had both ruled out the possibility of a coalition during their General Election campaigns.

Mr Rennie told the Daily Record: "I couldn't believe the ruthlessness of the Conservatives.

"Immediately after working together to keep the country together, they were prepared to move to a partisan, selfish, English nationalist campaign which undid a huge amount of good work that had been done to unify the country.

"It was incredibly selfish but also incredibly damaging for the future of the country.

"I couldn't believe how they had changed so quickly from being constructive unifiers to being dividers of the country. I will never forgive them for doing that."

Following the election result, former Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said that the Tories Labour SNP coalition 'fear strategy' had led voters to back the Conservatives.

Since entering into a coalition with the Tories, the Liberal Democrats have lost 95 councillors, 12 MSPs and 10 MPs in Scotland.

In a live Facebook Q&A with HeraldScotland earlier this week, Mr Rennie said that he does not expect the SNP to repeat their crushing victory in last year's Westminster elections in the Holyrood elections in May.
