The national food and drink policy must address the country's problem with obesity and ill-health related to diet, according to MSPs.

Speaking at a Holyrood debate to update MSPs on the development of the latest food and drink strategy, Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead said: "We may be world beating in terms of food quality but we are also beating much of the world in terms of diet-related ill health.

"The average waistline for Scottish men has grown by two inches in a decade. Two-thirds of Scots continue to be overweight or obese and on current trends, obesity is set to cost Scotland £3 billion by 2030.

"Fruit and vegetable consumption in the poorest 20 per cent has fallen by a fifth since the recession."
