Labour have chosen its candidate to fight the by-election sparked by the death of one of the party's MSPs.

Fife Council leader Councillor Alex Rowley has been selected by the party to contest the Cowdenbeath constituency following the death of Labour MSP Helen Eadie.

She died last month at the age of 66, just days after it emerged she was being treated for cancer.

The vote to find her successor will be held on January 23 next year, with Mr Rowley saying he was "delighted" to be Labour's candidate.

He added: "Unfortunately, this by-election is taking place due to the sad loss of Helen Eadie. Helen served our community with tremendous energy and her commitment to Cowdenbeath will inspire me and our party to ensure that we work hard to win this by-election and continue to give Cowdenbeath a strong voice in Holyrood.

"Representing Cowdenbeath in the Scottish Parliament would be a tremendous honour and I hope that over the next few weeks Scottish Labour will put across our clear vision for the constituency, Fife and Scotland.

"I look forward to speaking to as many constituents as possible over the length of the campaign."

Labour Leader Johann Lamont praised Mr Rowley's "passion and commitment" to the area.

She said: "I know that if the people of the Cowdenbeath constituency put their faith in Alex, he would be a tremendous MSP for their area."
