Eilidh Briggs' timely victory in last weekend's Welsh Women's Open Strokeplay Championship has been rewarded with a call-up to the Great Britain & Ireland team for next month's Curtis Cup match against the USA.
The 21-year-old from Kilmacolm, a former Scottish Girls' champion, secured her place in the nine-woman team through the Ladies' Golf Union's order of merit. There was more good news on the home front as Aberdeen-born Gemma Dryburgh, who has been making impressive strides on the US college scene, earned a pick from an LGU selection panel. The Scottish duo are two of six rookies in Tegwen Matthews' team for the defence of the cup the GB&I side won in dramatic fashion at Nairn two years ago.
With no aspirations no turn professional, the GB&I selection is set to be the pinnacle of Briggs' career.
"It was a bit of an anxious wait but I felt that by winning the Welsh at the weekend that I'd hopefully done enough to make it," she said. "I've never wanted to turn professional. All I've ever wanted was to play for GB&I in the Curtis Cup. It's fantastic there are two Scots as there were none in the last Vagliano Trophy side."
Stephanie Meadow, who claimed the winning point in the 2011 triumph, and Bronte Law have both retained their places in the side while Surrey teenager Annabel Dimmock, who won the Helen Holm Scottish Women's Open Strokeplay Championship, will be among the new faces.
