Pepe Mel has left his role as head coach of West Bromwich Albion after just five months in the post.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes was linked with a return to the midlands club following the news, with erstwhile Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay also among those linked to the job.

West Brom confirmed yesterday that Mel agreed to end his reign by mutual consent and despite a standing ovation from supporters during the final match of the season, against Stoke City on Sunday. He had signed an 18-month contract in January following the sacking of Scot Steve Clarke.
