Edinburgh-born Sally Watson has a winning chance going into the third and final round of the LETAS event in Sweden, the Onsjo Ladies Open.

The Fife-based former Curtis Cup player was lying joint fourth on level-par 144 after rounds of 73 and 71. She was only three shots behind the leader, Sweden's Lina Boqvist, with Alford's Laura Murray the second-best Scot in joint 20th place on 149 (74-75). Also surviving the second-round cut at 154 and better were Glasgow's Gemma Webster (74-78) on 152 and Jane Turner (Craigielaw) on 153 with scores of 76 and 77.

Gabrielle MacDonald, the Scottish champion, finished the top Scot in the British women's open amateur strokeplay championship won by Meghan MacLaren (Wellingborough), at Ashburnham in South Wales.

Craigielaw member and St Andrews student MacDonald finished tied 15th on 307, 15 shots behind the winner with scores of 79, 74, 77 and 76. Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) finished joint 18th on 307.

MacLaren, whose father is a European Tour director and whose mother an Irish senior international, produced a final-day aggregate of nine-under-par 139 with scores of 70 and 69. That swept the US college student into the lead past faltering leader Olivia Winning (Rotherham) who ended with 76 and 78.
