SCOTLAND dominated play but went down 3-0 against Spain in their second match of the tri-nations tournament in Hamburg, part of the final build-up for the European Nations Championships in London next month.

It was a case of the Scots leaving their shooting boots behind while the Spanish took their few chances they created from breakaways.

"I'm disappointed to lose but we didn't play for the full 60 minutes of the game," said Gordon Shepherd, Scotland's coach. "The positive outcome for the Europeans is that we played really well when we controlled the game, especially in the final 15 minutes with our superior fitness, but we just couldn't convert our many chances into goals."

In the first-half Nikki Kidd and Emily Maguire had chances from penalty corners while Nikki Lloyd's effort was cleared off the line by a Spanish defender at another set-piece.

The best chance from open play fell to Becky Merchant, her high shot seemed to be heading for the roof of the net only to be palmed away by the goalkeeper. But it was Spain who held the lead at the interval through a penalty corner strike.

As the Scots tried to chase the game to get back on level terms in the second half they were hit by a couple of breakaway goals against the run of play to go three down.

Scotland's best chance came when Fiona Bruce fed the ball on to Vikki Bunce but she was taken out by a Spanish defender in the circle. The Dundee Wanderers playmaker dusted herself down but unfortunately sent her spot effort wide of the target.
