WES MORGAN last night hailed the band of brothers within the Leicester City dressing room who have completed perhaps the greatest fairytale in modern footballing history by winning the Barclays Premier League.
An 83rd-minute goal from Eden Hazard ensured Chelsea came back from 2-0 down at home to second-placed Tottenham Hotspur to secure a 2-2 draw and handed the title to Claudio Ranieri’s side.
Morgan, the Leicester captain, expressed his pride at his side’s achievement last night and insisted it was wholly deserved.
“It’s the best feeling of my career and I couldn’t be prouder that it’s as part of this team,” he said. “Everyone’s worked so hard for this, nobody believed we could do it, but here we are, Premier League champions and deservedly so.
“I’ve never known a spirit like the one between these boys, we’re like brothers.
“People saw it last season when everyone expected us to be relegated, but we fought back to prove people wrong. This season’s been a continuation of that. We’ve built on the momentum, but I don’t think anyone believed it would come to this.
“Saturday can’t come quickly enough. I can’t wait to get my hands on the trophy.”
Jamie Vardy, the England striker, hosted the house party of all house parties to mark the occasion.
Vardy invited his Foxes team-mates to his home to watch televised coverage of Tottenham Hotspur’s visit to Chelsea with footage being posted of their celebrations on social media.
City were 5000-1 outsiders at the beginning of the season with their triumph receiving plaudits from all across the footballing community.
Mauricio Pochettino, the Tottenham manager, led the tributes in a sporting reaction to his side’s failure to take the title race to the wire.
“I congratulate Claudio and Leicester, a massive, amazing season for them,” said Pochettino. “They deserve it. I’m disappointed, but very proud.”
Martin O’Neill, the former Celtic manager, led Leicester City to their previous highest Premier League finish of eighth in 2000, and insisted that the club’s achievement has given everyone in the game reason to dream again.
"Not only is it a brilliant story, but it gives everyone that little bit of hope again,” said O’Neill, who was part of the Nottingham Forest side which conquered England and then went on to win the European Cup. “That romance has not left football.
"It's been the talk of Europe. There's no question about that.
Everything about this season has been remarkable..”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
