DUNDEE United have announced that Stewart Murdoch has signed on a one-year deal following his release from Ross County.

The Staggies confirmed yesterday that the midfielder was leaving Dingwall halfway through his contract and United confirmed his arrival today.

The 26-year-old becomes the first signing made by new Tangerines manager Ray McKinnon as he begins rebuilding for their Championship campaign.

He made 34 appearances and scored two goals for Jim McIntyre's side last season as he helped the club to a top six finish and League Cup triumph, and McKinnon was happy to get his man.Glasgow Times: 16/05/16 . “I am delighted to have Stewart on board," he said.

"He is exactly the type of player we need going into this season. Not only is he the right age and a good footballer but he is a ball winner who is strong in the tackle and will protect our central defenders. I am sure United fans will take to him straight away.”

Murdoch came through the youth ranks at Falkirk and played for Fleetwood Town for two seasons before joining County. 

He underlined to the Dundee United website that he is looking forward to the challenge of bouncing back following relegation last season.

“I’m delighted to be joining Dundee Utd, it was an easy decision to make," said Murdoch.

"It’s a massive club and I want to help them get back to the Ladbrokes Premiership where they should be.”
