RANGERS midfielder Joey Barton says Glenn Hoddle is 'miles away' from being the right man to take the 'poisonous' England manager's job.
Roy Hodgson stepped down from the position last night after his side were knocked out of Euro 2016 by Iceland in a shock 2-1 defeat.
The former Burnley and Queens Park Rangers man lamented the lack of talent available to succeed the 68-year-old, after they missed the chance to go for decorated coaches Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho, who have joined Bayern Munich and Manchester United.
The likes of Gareth Southgate, Glenn Hoddle and Alan Shearer have been touted as possible candidates, but Barton has dismissed his fellow Englishman as not up to the task.
He wrote on Twitter: "England should hire best available manager. All British managers mentioned should not be even considered. It will only bring more failure.
"Ancelotti or Mourinho would have been perfect. Both out of a job 6 months ago. Those mentioning Hoddle are really so far away.
"(Hoddle) did OK in 1998 WC but he's been out of the game a long time and having worked with him at QPR, he is so far behind where he needs to be.
"Until there is a plethora of standout candidates from these Isles, the like anyone else who wants to be successful you hire best available.
"That's if best available would take it. Because England job has become a graveyard. Every manager who takes it, career wise dies.
"Hodgson, McClaren, Eriksson, Capello, Hoddle, Venables, Pearce (caretaker) and Graham Taylor. Only Bobby Robson after Italia 90 went forward."
When questioned about who he would suggest to take over, Barton replied: "Someone who knows how to win. Knows what that looks and feels like. I wouldn't touch it if I was a top manager. It's poison.
"Ancelotti would have been perfect. (Harry) Redknapp would have been miles better than Roy but not an FA man.
"Got to ask who would want it? Only ones who do aren't good enough. All those who are good, aren't stupid enough. Strange times."
Barton has worked closely with Hoddle at QPR when he was a first team coach and insists he wouldn't be the right appointment.
The former Tottenham star took England to the quarter-finals of the 1998 World Cup, but hasn't held a management job since leaving Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2006.
Barton wrote: "He was manager 18 yrs ago. Trust me he's miles away now. Will only take us backwards. Not the answer. Out of touch.
"You know how I feel. That's me done on the matter. Just a passionate English man who feels his federation is letting him down. Consistently."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.

We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
