CYCLING
Glasgow's Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome will host the UCI Track Cycling World Cup towards the end of the year. The event, from 4 to 6 November, will see the Great Britain team compete on home soil for the first time following the Olympic games.
Peebles rider Grant Ferguson is targeting another top 20 finish in tomorrow's elite men's cross-country final at the Mountain Biking World Championships in the Czech Republic. The Scot earned a bronze medal in the under-23 final in Andorra last year, and has enjoyed a successful debut season at senior level, despite mechanical problems at the European Championships and a crash in his last race in France. The 22-year-old also finished 17th in Australia and a career-best 15th at the World Cup in Germany in May.
GOLF
A FIELD which includes 28 major champions will assemble at Carnoustie later this month to compete in the Senior Open Championship. There are 15 winners of regular majors taking part in the 30th-anniversary event, including former winners Tom Watson and Fred Couples. Marco Dawson from the United States will defend his title from July 21 to 24 against those two and four others who have also won the event before - Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Mark O’Meara and Craig Stadler. Home representation includes Colin Montgomerie and Sam Torrance.
ROWING
The British Olympic Association has announced the composition of the men's eight for Rio: Scott Durant, Tom Ransley, Andrew T Hodge, Matt Gotrel, Pete Reed, Paul Bennett, Matt Langridge, Will Satch and cox Phelan Hill.
Hodge and Reed have twice won Olympic gold in the men’s four. Ransley, Langridge and Hill were men’s eight bronze medallists in London, while Satch won bronze in the men’s pair.
RUGBY
Scotland centre Nick de Luca has joined Wasps from French club Biarritz. The 32-year-old has signed a short-term deal, primarily as injury cover, but director of rugby Dai Young said he had not ruled out a longer-term contract.
Glasgow Warriors have confirmed the departure of Kieran Low. The 25-year-old forward made three appearances for the team last season before joining Saracens on loan in December.
SQUASH
Edinburgh teenager Elspeth Young received some good news yesterday despite bowing out in the first round of the New South Wales Open in Sydney. The 19-year-old European team gold medallist lost 5-11, 8-11, 7-11 to Australian sixth seed Lakeesha Rarere, but then heard that she had climbed three places to number 178 in yesterday's updated WSA world rankings.
Alan Clyne will celebrate his 30th birthday later this month as Scotland's number one player after staying ahead of his training partner Greg Lobban in yesterday's new PSA world rankings. Lobban improved one place to 38th, but Clyne retained top spot in 36th.
SWIMMING
City of Glasgow's Ryan Brown and Livingston's Craig McLean were named yesterday in the Great Britain squad for next week's European Junior Championships in Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
