Frankie Dettori moved on to 2,999 British winners when Ghayyar claimed victory at Newmarket on Friday evening.

The Richard Hannon-trained juvenile (100-30) left the popular Italian on the brink of achieving the notable landmark after he defeated Glencadam Glory by three-quarters of a length in the NGK Spark Plugs EBF Stallions Maiden over a mile.

Dettori made virtually all of the running aboard the son of Power, and though the runner-up was a huge eyecatcher, the successful rider had done enough to keep the 2-1 favourite at bay.

Ghayyar, who stepped up considerably on his first start at Goodwood last month, could also be a name to follow as the mighty Frankel won this race on his debut in 2010.

Dettori said: "He's improved a lot for his first start and the mile suited him better than the seven furlongs at Goodwood.

"It was a stop-start race, but when he quickened up, he put the race to bed well."
