Kathleen Dawson finished fifth in her first global final at the world short course swimming championships in Windsor, Canada with a third Scottish record in 48 hours.

The 19-year-old, who is now based at the University of Stirling, saw British team-mate Georgia Davies finish ahead to take bronze in the 100 metres backstroke.

But Dawson – a European medallist earlier this year - lowered her national mark once again to 56.73 seconds to come two places behind.

Fellow Scot Mark Szaranek missed out on the 100m butterfly final despite setting a new personal best of 51.48 secs in the semis.

Elsewhere, Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu landed a second gold in the women’s 200m butterfly while Germany’s Marco Koch took the men’s 100m breaststroke title.

Meanwhile former Australian national coach Shannon Rollason is to become the new head swimming coach at the University of Edinburgh.

Rollason, who oversaw the Aussies at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing when they claimed 20 medals, will arrive next month following a stint in charge of Denmark.

“We are delighted that Shannon has chosen to join us,” said Edinburgh’s head of performance swimming Chris Jones.

“We pride ourselves on the support we give our performance athletes to excel in both their sport and studies. His experience will complement our skills set and help take our ambitious, world-class programme to the next level.”

Edinburgh was represented at Rio 2016 by swimmers from Ireland, Hong Kong and the Cayman Islands but has lost ground to rival hub in Stirling and Aberdeen in recent years in attracting leading Scots to its base.
