JORDAN THOMPSON hopes the words of wisdom from captain Lee Wallace will help him adapt to a left-back berth for Rangers this season.
The midfielder has been utilised in the unfamiliar defensive role by boss Pedro Caixinha as he has been given a chance to impress ahead of the new Premiership campaign. Thompson spent last term on loan at Raith Rovers but found a handful of new faces ahead of him in the central pecking order on his return to Ibrox as the likes of Ryan Jack, Carlos Pena and Graham Dorrans have signed on in recent weeks.
The step back has offered the Northern Irishman a new perspective on the game and it is a challenge he is determined to rise to in a bid to catch Caixinha’s eye in the coming weeks.
“I’ve had a few experiences playing left-back beforehand and I like it,” he told RangersTV. “It’s something different and you can see everything in front of you, and having a left foot, it’s easier going up and down the wing. It’s just about getting the positioning right, and I’ve been watching Lee Wallace and a few other left backs to try and get ideas from them.
“Lee has been great in terms of that. He’s brilliant with all the boys, but when there has been something new for me he has certainly helped me there. The manager has been brilliant too. I think I was only in for one session under him before we split up for summer, but he’s been fantastic for me and the rest of the boys.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
