GRAEME Murty said he would quiz Josh Windass about his choice of goal celebration after his players silenced their critics with a 2-0 win against Partick Thistle at Firhill.

The 24-year-old attacking midfielder, who had spurned chances in the club’s home defeat to Hibs on Saturday, and full back James Tavernier, who had conceded the late penalty which led to Jamie MacLaren’s late winner for the Easter Road side, produced moments of sublime quality in either half which won the day against the Ibrox side’s city rivals, with Windass holding a finger to his lips as he ran towards his own fans in the Jackie Husband Stadium in celebration after his first half opener.

Murty said he would get to the bottom of that in the next few days, but also revealed that he had had a 40-minute heart-to-heart with his ten-goal midfielder on the eve of the match as to how he can take the strides which can take his game onto the next level.

“I’ll be honest, I didn’t see it,” said Murty. “I’ll talk to him about it and ask why he has done it - if he has done it. But to be perfectly honest I don’t know why Josh does many of the things that he does.

“I’ll have a chat to him and see what he meant by it eventually,” he added. “But let’s talk about the goal, it was outstanding. The delivery and cross in was great. But then you need to execute and Josh has that execution of the highest order. And then in the next breath he will do something that makes you scratch your head. That’s the bit that he has to get right - that’s the bit that’s going to get him to the next level. When he’s top level he’s great. It’s the bit that makes you scratch your head that makes people pause about him.

"And that is six for Tav this season," he added. "He is a great modern attacking full back. He has terrific quality in the final third and he is an outstanding finisher as we saw. We see that in training all the time and it was a bit special to see it tonight. Today you saw glimpses of what we are about - both good and bad. I want to see the good stuff more often and when we do it will confirm we are on the right path.”

Murty who started with Jason Cummings ahead of the in-demand Colombian Alfredo Morelos for the first time in the league, said the decision was only 'a squad rotation thing'. "He is only young, only 21, has come direct from Finland into our season and has played lots of games," said Murty. "It’s just a question of going and picking a team to win the game and I felt Jason did really well at times, albeit that we need to make him more chances. We have a really good squad now and it’s up to us to make sure we husband those resources the best way.’

Thistle manager Alan Archibald cut a frustrated figure afterwards, with the home side well in this game in the early stages. Not only did Conor Sammon have a low shot on the stroke of half time which struck the foot of the post before bouncing back almost across the goal-line, but Archibald bemoaned an errant offside flag from assistant referee Stuart Stevenson which ruled off what should have been a perfectly valid opening goal from Ryan Edwards.

“I thought we started the game really brightly, especially the first 30 minutes," he said. "We were comfortable, had some chances, but we didn’t take them. Connor Sammon should have scored and in the form he is on you do expect the net to bulge. And the goal that gets chopped off isn’t offside. It’s clearly onside I have been told. That’s disappointing. We often don’t get those decisions when the linesman is on that side.”
