ALLAN MCGREGOR: No chance with opening goal and had very little else to do but watch the ball go past him as Brian Ruiz rattled the bar 6
GRANT HANLEY: Limitations on the ball shown up as part of the back three, struggling at times to link up with Paterson and missing the mark with several passes. Defended well enough 5
CHARLIE MULGREW: Captain for the evening and was neat and tidy enough in possession as well as solid enough at the heart of the back three. The one member of the backline who consistently found a pass 6

SCOTT MCKENNA: Good ball over the top to Robertson in first half and gained in confidence on the ball as game wore on, although his passing didn’t always find the mark. Decent enough debut form the Aberdeen youngster though 6
CALLUM PATERSON: Deployed at right wing-back but always provides a goal threat, and headed Ritchie’s corner just wide in first half. Wasteful in possession at times and looked a little out of sorts 5
SCOTT MCTOMINAY: Subdued debut for the Manchester United man in front of the watching Jose Mourinho, but showed glimpses of his passing ability and impressive physicality before being replaced just before the hour 6
KEVIN MCDONALD: Got stuck in but failed to really influence the game from the middle of the park 5

TOM CAIRNEY: Gave the ball away for Costa Rica to break and then lost the runner who provided the cross for the opening goal. Improved slightly after the break and had one great pass to create a chance for McBurnie before being replaced 5
ANDY ROBERTSON: Good interception set up chance for McBurnie and showcased his explosive running power to get in behind when he could. Some good crosses in second half that deserved better from the men in the middle 7
MATT RITCHIE: Frequently conceded possession and looked ponderous on the ball. Ballooned attempt at a cross that almost cleared the stand behind the goal rather summed up his night, and then passed up best Scotland opportunity of the night when firing straight at Navas 4
OLI MCBURNIE: Latched onto Robertson ball to test Navas with good low effort in the first half and put in a real shift up front on his own on his debut. Insistence on coming onto right foot cost him a couple of chances as he turned into traffic 6

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
