CONNOR GOLDSON insists Rangers must target silverware in his first season at Ibrox as Steven Gerrard looks to turn the tables on double treble winners Celtic.
The Light Blues have been left empty handed in the last two campaigns as their Old Firm rivals have swept the board under boss Brendan Rodgers.
Goldson has moved to Ibrox from Brighton in a £3million deal and is determined to give supporters a reason to be cheerful this term.
He said: “We have got to want to win something. I think it has been a few years now since Rangers have won anything.
“With the fanbase and the size of the club, the fans are craving success. That was a reason for me coming here – I want to come here and win things.
“That has got to be our aim. We have to do as well as we can in the league, we have to do as well as we can in the cups and as well as we can in the Europa League.
“That’s what this football club demands. You have to go out every single game and do well. We are going to have to get a good team spirit together, find a way of playing and stick to it. Then it is about being mentally strong and going out and winning games.
“Definitely [we can challenge]. I think there are good players here.
“I feel there is a happiness about people here and a good team spirit. You get the sense the group is quite strong.
“The few new boys have settled in quite well and that is credit to the boys who were already here. They have brought us all in together.
“I think we are in a good position. The manager is a looking to bring in another few new faces and I think we’ll have a good squad.”
Rangers have a chance to lay down a marker of their title intentions during their tricky trips to Pittodrie and Parkhead in the first month of the season.
And Goldson reckons belief will be key for the Gers as they look to hit the ground running under the guidance of Liverpool legend Gerrard.
He said: “Listen, everyone knows we are going to go into the season being underdogs. But that is something you have to do in football and underdogs can always win things.
“Obviously, Celtic have had a good few years but we have to now put that behind us. It’s a new season, a fresh season and if we approach every game right – whether it be the smallest game in the league or the Celtic game – we have to go into every game believing we can win them.
“Of course [I am excited about the Old Firm games]. But at the moment I’m just looking forward to the first game of the season.
“To be honest, I’m just looking forward to the first friendly and playing at Ibrox. Then it will be the Europa League games and Aberdeen in the first game in the league.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
