A planned 12-hour BBC strike to coincide with Wednesday's opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games has been called off after a new pay offer was made.

Members of the National Union of Journalists and technicians from Bectu will now be consulted over the offer. The event from Celtic Park is being hosted by Gary Lineker, Hazel Irvine and Clare Balding.

A BBC spokesman said: "We're pleased the unions have suspended their strike action in order to consult their members and we hope that we will now be able to resolve this dispute. We are now concentrating on delivering the best coverage of the Commonwealth Games for our audiences."

Gerry Morrissey, general secretary of Bectu, said: "We now have a significantly improved offer."

It includes £800 for staff on less than £50,000; with £650 payable on August 1 and a further £150 next year.

Meanwhile, the number of people who have become ill following a norovirus outbreak at the athletes' village in Dalmarnock has risen to 48, after 18 security staff were signed off sick.
