BATON bearer Kieran Fergusson was swamped by primary pupils asking for his autograph after his moment of glory,

The S5 pupil at Penicuik High is a member of the school's League 2014 organisation and was nominated for his work in it. He carried the baton from the school entrance up to the steps and later from Penicuik Park back to the school.

Inside, he took part in a question and answer session with cyclist and documentary-maker Mark Beaumont, who accompanied the baton on its travels around the world.

"It was a brilliant experience," Kieran said afterwards.

"It was a bit nerve-racking, but I really enjoyed it.

"I had played it through in my head beforehand but I was still paranoid about dropping it.

"I kept saying to myself 'Do not drop it! Do not trip!'

He added: "The baton is a lot heavier than it looks. You can really feel it across your forearm. I was a bit worried it was just gradually going to get lower and lower as I was walking along.

"But it has been a great experience and I have met some lovely people. It's brilliant for the community and for the high school in particular."
