TECHNICAL problems at security checkpoints caused a minor delay for thousands of spectators at Hampden Park.

The problem meant sports fans were delayed entering the park for last night's athletics, after some had already waited for hours in high temperatures.

As a Clydesider volunteer announced that the checkpoints could open 10 minutes later than planned, security officials gave a cheer along with the crowds who had already faced lengthy queues to get into the venue.

While the majority of people were still happy with the way they had been treated, some complained about the lengthy wait. Spectator Steve Newbury, 46, of Staffordshire, claimed he and his family queued for two hours before being allowed into the venue.

He said: "We've had to wait two hours - it's been absolutely rubbish.

"No-one told us anything, there was no water handed to us, no entertainment. I'm really disappointed."

Nick Griffiths, 39, of Carlisle, said he had queued for about 40 minutes and was happy with the way he was treated by volunteers and police officers.

However, he said it would be better if crowds were allowed into venues earlier. Mr Griffiths added: "It's actually been better today then yesterday, when we had to wait for an hour and a half."

Alexandra McKenzie, who had a young baby with her, said the heat was a problem.

She said: "It's just that you have to queue for a while in this heat, that's the real problem and you can't control that,

"We were given water and volunteers even offered to hold the baby if we needed them to."

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "There was a minor technical problem which was quickly resolved and had no impact on spectators attending for the athletics event."

A Glasgow 2014 spokeswoman said there were no queues by the time the event began at 7pm.
