Rain put paid to any chance of play in the first day of Scotland's Intercontinental Cup fixture against Afghanistan at Stirling yesterday.

The tournament carries the prospect of earning Test status further down the line, but heavy overnight rainfall left the outfield waterlogged and ensured a frustrating day for the protagonists. After an idle morning, the umpires signalled for lunch to be taken at 1pm. Although there was no more rain in the afternoon, and the sun started to appear, there was to be no cricket for the few hardy spectators who had braved the elements to watch.

At 3:30pm it was decided that the outfield wasn't going to dry sufficiently, and play was abandoned for the day.

Weather permitting, play is due to commence at 10:30am today, albeit with the prospect of a result reduced by the fact a four-day match has now been cut to three.
