MAJID Haq is an injury doubt for the Saltires' YB40 encounter with Essex on Sunday.

The spinner, Scotland's leading ODI wicket-taker, sustained a hamstring injury while batting in Monday's defeat to Surrey.

Haq was forced to leave the field during his thrilling seventh-wicket stand with Calum MacLeod.

He returned with a "runner" at the fall of the next wicket in a bid to secure an unlikely win but may have aggravated the problem as the Scots fell 14 runs short.

Haq will undergo treatment for the remainder of the week but is struggling to make the trip to Chelmsford.

Coach Pete Steindl said: "We'll have more information about Maj tomorrow when the physio has another look but if there is even a slight tear we'd be talking of at least 10 days out. Whatever happens, we won't take risks. Maj is a key player and we have important games against Kenya coming up that we want him fully fit for. That will be the priority."

Richie Berrington, who missed the Surrey match with a chest infection, is expected to recover.

Meanwhile, Saltires captain Preston Mommsen will bolster the Scotland A team when they take on Leicestershire's second string today.

Mommsen is one of seven players who took part in the YB40 Bank Holiday double-header who will feature in the three-day match at Ratcliffe College. There is also a recall for Forfarshire wicketkeeper Craig Wallace, who will get the chance to reclaim the gloves from youngster Matty Cross.
