New Zealand crashed out of the ICC World Twenty20 after a nail-biting Super Over defeat by the West Indies – their second such loss in the Super 8s stage – who advanced to the semi-finals as a result of Sri Lanka's subsequent defeat of England.

Set 140 for victory in Pallekele, New Zealand looked on course for much of their innings as their captain Ross Taylor led the charge with 62 from 40 deliveries.

However, a late spell of tight bowling by the West Indies attack proved decisive in slowing the Black Caps' charge, with Sunil Narine's three for 20, including 10 dot balls, the standout performance.

The match boiled down to final-ball shoot-out with New Zealand needing two runs for victory but, when Doug Bracewell could manage just one from Marlon Samuels' delivery, they were left on 139 for seven and a Super Over was required.

Samuels was the hero for the West Indies in the additional overs, restricting New Zealand to 17 with ball in hand before hitting the winning 6 after being chosen alongside Chris Gayle to face Tim Southee.

With New Zealand on their way home, the West Indies were left sweating on the outcome of the second Group 1 match, where victory for Sri Lanka was to seal England's elimination and secure the safe passage of Darren Sammy's men.
