DAVID WEIR, Rangers' assistant manager, is adamant his side won’t get carried away by their 6-2 victory over Hibernian on Saturday.
The Ibrox side kicked-off their campaign in stunning style as they saw off their Championship title rivals in an eight-goal thriller at Easter Road.
It was the first competitive game that the new management team of Mark Warburton and Weir had taken charge of since their appointment at Ibrox.
“I don’t think there has been any celebrations," said Weir. “It was game four of our pre-season, that is how we billed it before the game, and it is part of the process we are going through.
“There is still a long way to go and a lot of work to be done. We were pleased with the result, but even within the performance, as the manager said immediately after the game, there are things we can do better and do better at. Ultimately, it was great to see the fans enjoying it so much.
“Football is about scoring goals and to score six goals at a place like Easter Road is always difficult. So, when you look at it like that, and see how clinical we were and how we took the chances then I think that is very positive.”
Rangers handed debuts to Wes Foderingham, James Tavernier, Danny Wilson, Rob Kiernan, Andy Halliday, Jason Holt and Martyn Waghorn as they eased to a Petrofac Training Cup triumph at Easter Road.
And Weir is pleased to see the summer recruits making an immediate impact. “It is a lot of new faces and a big ask to bring these people into the team in a fixture like that at a difficult place like that,” he said. “That was pleasing to get them involved, to hit the ground running and be a part of it and contribute as well as they did.”
