MORTON made their presence felt on their return to the Championship by earning a 1-1 draw with Falkirk at Cappielow. Falkirk threatened to ruin their day after the League One flag was unfurled before kick-off with Paul Watson marking his debut by squeezing home Aaron Muirhead’s flick to put Falkirk in front after 18 minutes.

But Morton came back and Peter MacDonald glanced home a header from a Ross Forbes’ corner after 60 minutes to set up a frantic final half-hour.

John Baird was wasteful when he hurried a shot over the crossbar late on and was guilty of a glaring miss in the final minutes when he shot wide.

Iain Russell scored his first goals of the season as Queen of the South saw off Alloa Athletic 3-1 at Palmerston. The home side were 3-0 in front by half time with Derek Lyle scoring before Russell struck with two, the last coming after side-stepping two defenders. There was consolation for Alloa when Iain Flannigan netted early in the second half.

Raith Rovers beat Livingston 3-0 in Ray McKinnon’s first league game in charge but the victory was not without some controversy. Mark Stewart scored early for Raith and they were then awarded a soft penalty 10 minutes from half time by referee Matt Northcroft, on the advice of his assistant, seemingly for a handball offence by Craig Sives. Ryan McCord duly scored.

Gary Glen and Darren Cole struck the crossbar in the second half as Livingston hit back, before Mitch Megginson sealed it with a third for Raith.
