JORDAN RHODES became one of the most expensive Scottish footballers of all time when he completed a deadline day move to Middlesbrough for an initial fee of £9million.
The 25-year-old, who has yet to convince Gordon Strachan he is worthy of a regular start for the national team, saw his combined transfer fees reach £17.3m after his switch from Blackburn Rovers, which had looked dead at the weekend, was pushed through hours before the window shut.
And on a good day for Scotland strikers, Steven Fletcher managed to secure a loan move to Marseille from Middlesbrough with a permanent deal a possibility at the end of this season.
Rhodes agreed a contract with Middlesbrough, who sit second in the Championship, until 2020 and after several years of scoring goals for fun in English football's second level, he could now get a long-awaited chance to play in the Premiership, which would help his cause in terms of impressing Strachan. He has 13 caps and three goals for his country.
Rhodes scored 87 goals in 148 appearances during a three-year stint at Huddersfield Town, which prompted Blackburn to pay out £8m for his services in August 2012. He scored 28 times in his first season in the Championship and 85 in 169 appearances for the Ewood Park club in total.
Fletcher's move to Marseille was one of the day's most interesting deals. Having fallen out of the picture at Sunderland, the 29-year-old managed just four goals this season for the Wearside club, a move to China had been mooted.
Fletcher, who began his career at Hibernian, is one of only three Scots to score 50 goals in the Premier League era along with Duncan Ferguson and Kevin Gallacher.
A statement on the Marseille website said: "He will not leave you unmoved. He will not go unnoticed. He’s a fighter. We love him already. Marseille has added a Scotsman to the mix. And if you know anything about the mentality of that people, you'll know that's good news."
