Europe's major nations could have up to five teams in UEFA's competitions from 2015 after it was decided to award both the winners of the Europa League and the European champions places in the following season's Champions League.

Currently, if a team finishes outside the qualification places in their national league but win the European crown, they displace a domestic qualifier, as happened last year when Chelsea consigned Tottenham to the Europa League. This has been deemed unfair, hence the move to change the rules.

Five clubs will be the limit, though. Should two sides from the same country win both the European competitions and both finishes outside of the domestic qualifying places, the side finishing fourth in the league would still miss out.
