RONNY DEILA believes improvements made within the fields of medicine and sports science at Celtic will give Kris Commons every chance of reporting himself fit for the first leg of the Europa League round of 32 visit of Internazionale next Thursday.

Mikael Lustig looks certain to miss the match as a result of an ankle injury picked up during Saturday's 2-0 win at Dundee in the fifth round of the William Hill Scottish Cup with Commons suffering from a thigh complaint sustained in the same match.

The midfielder, who recently signed a new two-year contract, is rated touch-and-go for the visit of Inter, but Deila is confident he will be capable of taking part thanks to a tailor-made recovery programme.

"Kris has a Grade One pulled muscle on the back of his thigh," said the manager. "It will take one to two weeks.

"We think he has a hope that he could reach the Inter game, but we will see.

"It will be about treatment, training and rest. He is in very good hands here.

"Everything on the medical side is going the right way. We work in a totally different way than before. I'm very happy that we have that."

Lustig is likely to spend a little longer on the sidelines with Deila reluctant to put any kind of timescale on his return.

"It will be a little bit more for him, but you never know with a twisted ankle," he said.

"He and Kris are two of our more experienced players, but we are looking forward to the two games against Inter. We have everything to win when we go into them."

Deila travelled to the San Siro at the weekend to see Inter, struggling in 11th place in Serie A, record a badly-needed 3-0 victory over Palermo. Despite those injury concerns, he retains a strong belief that his side can progress over two legs.

"After the game, I sat with a good feeling that we have a chance here and that is the most important thing," he said. "We can beat Inter Milan. We have done it before and we can do it again.

"I saw that they are a good team, but we are good as well. You can see that they are not getting 100 per cent out of the players they have at this time."

Deila also detects problems among the Inter fans with a recent loss at Sassuolo resulting in their players, Mauro Icardi and Fredy Guarin, becoming involved in a furious exchange with supporters who had refused to accept their jerseys as a peace offering.

"It was very quiet at the game," said Deila. "I think that is the atmosphere at Italian matches.

"It was not the same atmosphere in the big matches we have had.

"The fans weren't against them, but it was quiet."
