Gennaro Gattuso has emerged as an unexpected candidate to become manager of Palmero, following the Italian club's relegation from Serie A.

The former Rangers and Italy midfielder was sacked as player-coach of Swiss side FC Sion in February after collecting just 10 points from 11 matches in charge.

However, that has not deterred Palmero, with the club reportedly preparing to confirm the appointment of a new manager in the coming days. Maurizio Zamparini, the club's president, wishes to replace Giuseppe Sannino as head coach following relegation to Serie B and is thought to be keen on installing Gattuso.
