RINO GATTUSO admits it would be a dream to manage Rangers - but not while the ongoing boardroom battle continues to grip the club.

The Italian returned to Ibrox on Sunday to take part in a charity clash for former Gers captain Fernando Ricksen and was given a rapturous welcome by the Light Blue legions.

Caretaker boss Kenny McDowall has handed in his notice at the club and a new gaffer will need to be hired in the coming months.

But Gattuso is concerned about the state of the club as supporters and influential shareholders continue their bid to oust the under-fire board.

He said: "I still have a lot of memories here. It was 15 years ago that I started to play here.

"I felt the same running out there again. I'm maybe carrying five of six kilos more but it still felt fantastic.

"But now the club has big problems. They need to find a way of solving those.

"Of course I would be interested in the vacancy. I stopped playing two years ago. Now my job is to become a coach. That's normal.

"But at this time the road [to the Rangers job] is far away.

"We can speak but the problem now is that there is not one chairman but five people in control of the club. It's difficult.

"I know the club has big problems at this moment but Rangers is still a big club with a big story behind it.

"For me it would be a big honour to manage this club and a big opportunity."

A bumper crowd of more than 41,000 fans flocked to Ibrox to pay tribute to stricken Ricksen and raise funds for charity.

Supporters have stayed away in significant numbers this term and Gattuso was pleased to see a huge turnout once again.

He said: "When I see Rangers with 10-20,000 supporters, it is no good for the team and I hope many more come to the stadium.

"For Fernando, it was a big day. Ibrox when full is a fantastic atmosphere - an unbelievable day. He is very happy to come here today.

"It is a big memory to start here as a teenager. It is a fantastic day because I like this stadium, I like these people, these supporters.

"The club at this moment is not in a good condition, but I want the best for this club."
