Garry Hay has been left struggling to digest the news that his 18-year stay with Kilmarnock is now at an end.

The full-back, who made his debut for the club in 1999, was promised that he would be retained as a player-coach by Kenny Shiels, before the Northern Irishman was sacked as manager.

The 35-year-old was then briefly tipped to form part of a new coaching team but the departure of assistant manager Jimmy Nicholl and a conversation with chairman Michael Johnston confirmed that Hay was on his way out.

"I really don't know how I'm going to be able to tell my son that his daddy won't be playing for Kilmarnock again," said the full-back, who spent his whole career at Rugby Park. "Blake is five and he supports the club because it's in his blood, the same way it was in mine."
