Paterson registered both of his side's goals in a 2-1 win at Easter Road, taking his tally to nine for the season.
The teenager was required to work diligently on his finishing after being asked to assume the tole of main striker for Hearts at the start of the campaign, with no recognised alternative available. The emergence of Dale Carrick since has changed that - the forward was preferred in attack against Hibs - and has allowed Paterson to return to his favoured role in defence.
It is a position which Locke is now willing to allow the youngster to perform regularly and the manager has also praised Paterson for filling in up front at a time when his team needed him to. "Callum has played all over the place," said Locke, who has also selected the teenager on the right of midfield this season.
"We started the season without a recognised striker and Callum did a great job for us, but now Dale Carrick looks physically ready to play in the team. We felt we put Dale in at the right time as earlier in the season he was still getting brushed off the ball too easily."
Each of Paterson's goals rippled the rigging and caused waves at Easter Road, with Hibs still a point above the relegation play-off spot in the SPFL Premiership. The club have been in a nosedive for some time and a sizeable portion of supporters chose to bail out early during the Edinburgh derby defeat at the weekend.
Hibs' final two home matches are against Partick Thistle on Saturday and Kilmarnock a week later, with the Leith club reducing prices in an effort to entice fans in. Prices for the match with Kilmarnock have been reduced to £15 for adults and £5 for concessions - the same as for this weekend against Thistle.
James McPake, the Hibs defender, has spent much of this season in the stand due to injury but could be recalled ahead of schedule for the final matches of the campaign, with Paul Hanlon out injured and Jordon Forster facing a one-match ban. "James will play in the under-20s on Tuesday and then we'll see after that," said Terry Butcher, the Hibs manager.
