CELTIC are on the verge of making their second signing of the season as they expect to secure the transfer of Manchester United defender Saidy Janko by the start of next week.

Talks have taken place between the 19-year-old Swiss and Celtic over the past few days, it is believed he was given a tour of the training ground, and a deal is expected to be struck.

Janko, a natural right-back who can play in the centre of defence, spent the end of last season on loan at Bolton Wanderers with Neil Lennon, the former Celtic manager having been allowed to leave Manchester United in February.

He was brought from FZ Zurich to Old Trafford by David Moyes, who paid £700,000 for him two years ago, which is around about what Celtic expect to pay. But his only senior appearance came last August in an infamous League Cup 4-0 defeat by MK Dons.

Janko played ten times for Bolton last season and would become Celtic's second signing of the summer, following the purchase of fellow defender Dedryck Boyata from Manchester City.

The fact he can play in central defence is beneficial for Ronny Deila, the Celtic manager who feels he needs more cover in that area even if he can keep Virgil Van Dijk

But with two right-backs already at the club, Adam Matthews and Mikael Lustig, that position has been strong for a number of years and one may go out to accommodate Janko. Deila spoke last week about the need to reduce his squad numbers and that was before any new signing.

Janko initially did well at Manchester United, winning reserve team Player of the Year, but his career has stalled since Louis Van Gall arrived, plus the fact Sergio Ramos looks destined to move from Real Madrid to Manchester shows what direction that club is moving in and first-team opportunities would be almost non-existent.

Deila admitted that he is looking for another striker but would be prepared to wait until after Celtic's Champions League destiny is decided in August.
