Here's our view of how the men on the pitch fared:

SCOTLAND

Allan McGregor - Did well to keep his eye on Gareth Bale's swerving shot and beat the ball away in the first half and had little chance with both Wales goals. 6/10.

Alan Hutton - Did not have to go head-to-head with former Tottenham team-mate Gareth Bale, who started in a central role, with the right-back consequently able to provide a decent attacking outlet. 6

Charlie Mulgrew - Had a poor touch and free-kick just before delivering one of his trademark dangerous corners for Grant Hanley to head home. A steady display. 6

Grant Hanley - Rescued his slack team-mates with an early block but then made two blunders to put his team in trouble. Looked like rescuing his game with smart movement to head home the opener but continued to look suspect at the back. Booked for putting Jonathan Williams up in the air after an earlier heavy foul on Bale. 5

Gary Caldwell - Did not look comfortable in the opening stages but put in a decent shift. 6

James McArthur - Could not carry the burden left by the loss of Scott Brown, Darren Fletcher and James Morrison in central midfield. 5

Graham Dorrans - A surprise choice in central midfield, the West Brom player never looked comfortable and dwelled on the ball too often. 5

Robert Snodgrass - Such a mixed bag. Had recovered well from a slack start, during which he was booked for a sliding tackle on Chris Gunter, to cause Wales real problems running inside from the left flank, notably when he curled against the post following a short corner. But a needless and very late tackle on Gunter turned the game on its head as he gifted Wales a penalty and earned himself a second yellow card. 5

Chris Burke - The right winger put in a couple of dangerous first-half deliveries but otherwise failed to have the impact he did on his international return against Estonia last month. 5

Shaun Maloney - The early exchanges passed him by as Wales dominated possession but he dropped deeper to prove influential before the sending-off forced him out wide and to be starved of the ball. 7

Steven Fletcher - Carried off on a stretcher with his right knee in a brace after landing heavily following an aerial challenge inside 90 seconds.

Substitutes:

Kenny Miller (for Fletcher, five minutes) - Sent two first-half headers over but both crosses were just too high for him. Good movement and link-up play. 6

Charlie Adam (for Dorrans, 64) - Could not get into the game with his main contribution being to kick some opponents as Wales used their man advantage. 4

WALES

Boaz Myhill - Did not have much to do other than pick the ball out of the net from Grant Hanley's header. 6

Chris Gunter - The right-back struggled at times in his own half but his run forward proved a crucial intervention as he won the penalty that earned Snodgrass a red card. 5

Ben Davies - The young Swansea left-back was comfortable under pressure. 6

Sam Ricketts - Made some crucial penalty-box blocks but lost Hanley for the goal and was clumsy when challenging from behind. 5

Ashley Williams - A solid performance from the captain in central defence. 6

Joe Ledley - Powerful early display drove Wales forward but allowed frustration get the better of him as he complained to the referee several times despite escaping a booking for a series of fouls himself. Showed his experience as Wales got back on top. 7

Aaron Ramsey - Ran the show as Wales dominated early and late on but booked for a needless trip on Maloney just after Hanley's opener and then sent off in the dying seconds after bringing down McArthur when he lost possession. Partially spoiled a good night's work by ruling himself out of the Croatia game. 7

Jack Collison - Put in a hard-working but unspectacular display. 6

Hal Robson-Kanu - Booked for a blatant trip on Burke, he struggled to have a major impact on the left flank but scored the winner with a well-timed run and header. 6

Gareth Bale - Very rarely got the chance to run at the Scotland defence although he tested McGregor with a swerving shot. The virus-hit forward did not come back out after the break following a heavy challenge by Hanley. 6

Craig Bellamy - The former Celtic forward's early movement caused Scotland problems although he never got in behind. Some good sharp play in the final third caused Scotland problems though. 7

Substitutes:

Jonathan Williams (for Bale, 46) - Crystal Palace midfielder was a constant menace with some neat touches and dangerous crosses. 7

Andy King (for Collison, 58) - Put himself about and enjoyed his run-out after the game turned in his team's favour. 5
