SCOTLAND will at worst be in the four team play-off for next summer's World Cup in Canada after demolishing the Faroe Islands 9-0 at Fir Park.

Anna Signeul's side will qualify automatically if they beat Sweden by 3-1 or more, the scoreline when the Group 4 leaders won in Motherwell in June. "We've made history," coach Signeul said. "We're in the play-offs for the World Cup for the first time.

"We will go to Sweden and try to beat them. Why shouldn't we? There will be no pressure on us because they are the top seeds and favourites to qualify.

"I was very pleased with the performance tonight. We scored nine goals - and nine good goals."

The home side knew before kickoff that Sweden had beaten Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-0 in their penultimate match. It was a scoreline they had matched after just 11 minutes.

Kim Little celebrated her 100th appearance with a goal after six minutes. Faroes goalkeeper Randi Wardum did well to parry away Caroline Weir's fierce shot, but seconds later Hayley Lauder slipped the ball to Little, who scored in front of goal.

Recently voted the top player in America's National Women's Soccer League, and the recipient of the Golden Boot for good measure, the Seattle Reign midfielder then supplied the ammunition for Weir, who plays for Arsenal, to bag her first international goal.

Jane Ross added a third for the Scots from close range 60 seconds later, with the same player then forcing an outstanding save from Wardum.

After holding out for the rest of the second half, the Faroes went 4-0 within seconds of the second period getting under way, Lauder providing the assist for Ross to thump home her second goal.

The same combination proved fruitful again seven minutes later when Lauder set up Ross, her team-mate at Swedish club Vittsjo, to complete her hat-trick with her 33rd international goal.

Rachel Corsie scored her third goal in three games soon afterwards and her former Glasgow City team-mate Leanne Crichton made it seven just before the hour.

Corsie added her second and Scotland's eighth in the 69th minute. Jenny Beattie completed the rout in injury time.
